U.S. Carbon Cycle Science Program

U.S. Carbon Cycle Science Program

The U.S. Carbon Cycle Science Program, in consultation with the Carbon Cycle Interagency Working Group (CCIWG), coordinates and facilitates activities relevant to carbon cycle science, climate and global change issues under the auspices of the U.S. Global Change Research Program (USGCRP) Interagency Committee.

The ultimate objective of the U.S. Carbon Cycle Science Program is to develop increasingly realistic and predictive coupled carbon-climate and Earth system models to provide better insight into future feedbacks and drivers between the major components of the Earth system. The Program aims to make progress in:

  • Understanding the changes, magnitudes, and distributions of carbon sources and sinks
  • Understanding the processes operating within and between major terrestrial, oceanic, and atmospheric carbon reservoirs
  • Understanding the underlying mechanisms involved, including human activities, fossil fuel emissions, land use, and climate forcings.

The Carbon Cycle Interagency Working Group (CCIWG)

The Carbon Cycle Interagency Working Group (CCIWG) supports the peer-reviewed research of carbon cycle science across the Federal government and is responsible for defining program goals, setting research priorities, and reviewing the progress of the Federal research programs that contribute to carbon cycle science. With the support of the U.S. Carbon Cycle Science Program Office, the CCIWG accomplishes this by:

  • Convening Federal program managers
  • Producing program implementation plans
  • Planning and coordinating research and research support activities
  • Evaluating and ensuring research progress is achieved
  • Reporting carbon cycle research
  • Interacting with relevant USGCRP elements, relevant U.S. Government programs, the science community and public
  • Advising and participating in relevant syntheses and assessments
  • Serving as point of contact on carbon cycle research both nationally and internationally
